A vital component of Night of Festivals (www.nightoffestivals.com) in Leicester will be the marvellous textile installation Silkscape, which is being brought to the festival by Kinetika Artistic Director Ali Pretty (www.kinetika.co.uk).
Ali will be working with Leicester based participants to live paint a 40m piece of silk during the festival on Humberstone Gate at 11am Sunday 17th August. As with all performances, visual art and moving image at the event, Silkscape will respond to theme of ‘celebrating freedom & democracy through artistic innovation’.
There will be two events preceding the live paint spectacle. First, Ali will be meeting selected participants to take them on an evening walk around Leicester. The route will explore sights & places that particularly respond to the theme of ‘freedom’, and areas that reflect the diversity of communities within the city. The session aims get participants thinking about their interpretations of the theme, and what they will contribute to the colossal piece.
In addition to the walking session, Ali will visit Embrace Arts on 14th/15th July, to introduce the participants to the skills and techniques needed to create vibrant and illustrative work as part of the Silkscape project.
Night of Festivals will be the opening event this year’s City Festival in Leicester on 16th and 17th August and the finale of Silkscape will have a significant role to play in its formation.
