ArtReach has been working with national charity Sustrans since early 2013. As the organisation driving the development of the National Cycle Network, Sustrans has a long track record of art commissioning, with the canvas of the largest free access public art gallery in the country (15,000 miles of cycle paths!).
ArtReach supported Sustrans to review its arts commissioning and to develop a new Strategy for art to complement its 2020 Vision. This work has led to implementation of an ambitious Plan to:
- Deliver major participatory art projects in each of the four home Nations
- Create landmark iconic artworks that become a destination for cyclists and walkers
- Embed art commissioning skills and experience across the Sustrans team
In 2014 ArtReach has helped Sustrans to build a partnership with Scottish artists NVA and with Phoenix Dance Theatre in order to secure and deliver Ghost Peloton as a major commission for the Yorkshire Festival (Grand Depart, Tour de France).
ArtReach is also working with Sustrans to develop an exciting participation project with Blast Theory in Swansea Bay and to broker potential delivery of the extraordinary Speed of Light project, on bicycles in Birmingham city centre.
