ArtReach is now recruiting for Event Assistants and Volunteers based in Leicester, Manchester or Portsmouth to help the ArtReach team deliver Journeys Festival International in 2021.

Journeys Festival International (JFI) explores the refugee experience through the work of artists who either have a lived experience of forced migration or who explore the experiences of communities seeking sanctuary through their art.

Between 15 and 24 October, JFI will be delivered simultaneously in three locations – Leicester, Manchester and Portsmouth. The festival will bring together a vibrant mix of performances and exhibitions, including live music, visuals, installations, films and digital arts, storytelling, poetry, dance and theatre, along with discussions and workshops.

As an Events Assistant or Volunteer, you will play a valuable role in delivering this diverse arts festival over 10 days, helping thousands of JFI audiences enjoy their experience and discover something new.

Event Assistants (Based in Leicester, Manchester or Portsmouth)

£9.50 per hour (Freelance)

Join the JFI Team and support the ArtReach Producers and Coordinators to deliver JFI 2021. With prior experience in supporting the delivery of arts festivals or projects (small or large), you will have excellent communication and practical problem-solving skills, with the confidence to approach audiences to share what’s on at the festival and get their feedback, and help artists present their work offering exceptional support.

What you can expect:

  • You will support the Festival Producers with coordinating volunteers at the festival.
  • There will be work on site in venues to support get ins and get outs, provide assistance in venues or on stage, and you might be the main point of contact on-site at specific events throughout the festival. 
  • You will provide technical assistance to artists and contractors as required. 
  • You will be briefed fully so you can answer questions and gather feedback from the public about the festival and provide a warm and friendly presence to artists and our audience.
  • To support the Festival Producers with any other duties within the scope of the job role as needed.

What we are looking for:

  • Confidence in dealing with members of the public and audiences.
  • Flexible approach and willingness to take on a range of different tasks as and when required.
  • Willingness to travel and to work at weekends and in the evenings as required.
  • Experience in supporting the delivery of arts festivals and projects e.g., venue liaison, working with artists or being a stage assistant.
  • Ability to think practically to deliver the needs of events.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and a friendly and approachable manner. 
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure.
  • Knowledge of local arts and cultural organisations and venues in Leicester, Manchester or Portsmouth would be an advantage.

Volunteers (Based in Leicester, Manchester or Portsmouth)

Pay: This is a voluntary position but we will reimburse out of pocket expenses incurred whilst supporting the festival.

If you’re looking to gain some experience in Festival and Event Delivery or just want to support a project in your local community, then volunteer at Journeys Festival International and you will be able to shadow the professional team and carry out a range of different tasks that you feel able to take on.

What you can expect:

  • Shifts will be for a few hours at a time where you will support different members of the team as they prepare for and deliver the festival.
  • You will visit different installation sites and talk to artists and venue managers and get feedback or take action as necessary.
  • You may have to spend some time outdoors and could be on your feet for several hours.
  • You may be required to talk to members of the public and answer questions about the festival.
